Riders: ATVs, UTVs Not Dangerous

More ATV's Article

We've learned that the woman critically injured a little more than a week ago was riding a utility vehicle--an U-T-V, not an ATV.
There is a difference between the two, but safety concerns surround them both.
They're at least two times heavier and have more space. ATV and UTV dealer Waymond Carroll said, "You can get them either in two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, or six wheel drive. You can haul three passengers or we have the new crew cab that offers to haul availability six passengers.
Outdoor enthusiasts say that's what makes utility vehicles--or UTVs--just as fun as ATVs.
But others say they're just as dangerous.
On March 30th, 21-year-old Bobbie Jean Lunn was seriously injured while riding on an UTV.
Taylor County Sheriff's deputies say she was with others at a place called the "mud bog" off Redpadgett Road near Perry.
Deputies say the UTV flipped over on top of her.
Carroll said, "They [UTVs] are probably a little bit safer because they are wider wheel-base fan and they offer more stability."
The owner of the mud bog property says his only comment during this time is that he is very concerned for Lunn's well-being and wishes the best for her and her family.
Between 1982 and 2006, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says there were 349 ATV deaths in Florida and 240 in Georgia.
Still, area riders say ATVs and UTVs are safe vehicles and riding in the mud is gaining popularity.
ATV rider Cole Revels said,
"They are not built for that kind of stuff but what's the point of having one if you're not going to have fun with it."
Experts say you should get proper training before riding the recreational vehicles.
Lunn's mother says her daughter's injuries were fixed in an extensive surgery Tuesday. Her family says she is recovering well.
